You've probably heard the term "digital nomad" recently. Digital nomads are people who lead a nomadic lifestyle while working remotely using digital technologies. Their unconventional way of life has allowed them to value life experiences and strong relationships over material possessions. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of people who choose digital nomadism as their lifestyle if their profession is suitable.

But the question remains: what is a digital nomad?
Get to know Digital Nomads

The term "digital nomad" was coined in 1997 by Tsugio Makimoto and David Manners in their book, The Digital Nomad. Their book predicted, among other things, the creation of a single, all-powerful communication gadget that would allow people to work from anywhere.

And indeed, in the 21st century, digital nomads work from laptops, social media, and mobile phones. They could work from a beach community in Mexico for a few months before returning to a part-time job in London or Paris. Most notably, the advantage of being a digital nomad is the ability to live and work anywhere you want.

Can anybody be a digital nomad?

The answer is yes! Digital nomads are mostly younger people who work in a variety of fields in the knowledge economy, including marketing, design, information technology, writing, media, tutoring, and consultancy. Whilst most digital nomads are in their 20s, however the average age is 35.

Pete and Supi

Many people fantasise about working and living on the road, and Pete and Supi's dream has come true. A DW documentary showed a married couple setting out to escape the mundane routine of everyday life, motivated by a desire to travel. In a nomadic realm of adventure, they want to achieve self-fulfilment through maximum security nets and full-cover insurance coverage.

Pete is a DJ, so events and big cities define his life, whereas Suparni, aka Supi, is the polar opposite; she seeks spirituality and awareness. The couple demonstrate the vast range of opportunities that the digital nomad world has to offer. Despite their fundamental differences, they both make a living by working remotely. It’s all thanks to the digital age that has made this way of life possible; without the internet, it would be nearly unthinkable.

Digital Nomads in Action

When the COVID-19 pandemic struck in early 2020, countries went into lockdown, and many desk occupations went remote. In reaction to this crisis, a new breed of digital nomads has emerged. During this time span, the population of digital nomads increased dramatically, with a 50% increase from 2019. However, as the need for remote labour increased, some digital nomads found themselves fighting for resources, while others were compelled to relocate back home to family members when countries closed their borders to help slow the spread of the virus.

The Bottom Line

The number of people who live a digital nomadic lifestyle is expected to grow as more professions can be done remotely. Making your own hours and working from various locations are just a few of the benefits of becoming a digital nomad.
